Shower pipes are vital cleaning components in the paper making industry and are essential to the operation of paper machines, commonly utilized in the wet end and press section. In the wet end, they are used to clean the forming fabric, vacuum boxes, and the couch roll, thereby maintaining equipment cleanliness, sealing integrity, and dewatering efficiency, while ensuring the smooth transfer of the paper sheet; this section also accounts for the highest consumption of fresh water and clarified white water in the paper making process. Spray pipes located in the press section are used to clean press felts and press rolls, as well as to lubricate components such as vacuum suction box.
Paper machine shower pipes are typically arranged transversely along the paper machine, with multiple spray nozzles mounted on the pipe body.
During operation, water is delivered through the shower pipes to the various nozzles and then applied to the fabric surface at a specific pressure, flow rate, and spray angle.
For shower spray systems required to perform reciprocating motion, the swing accuracy of the shower pipe is also a key factor affecting cleaning performance.
By continuously oscillating the shower pipe in the machine width direction, the spray water can cover the fabric surface more evenly, reducing the risk of uneven cleaning that might occur with fixed spray zones.
Oscillating spraying can also improve the uneven coverage often seen with fixed-position fan-shaped and needle-shaped spray nozzles, thereby helping to reduce localized contamination of the fabric.
Uniform oscillating spraying keeps the forming fabric and press felt clean, reduces surface defects in the paper sheet caused by contamination and uneven cleaning, and maintains the fabric’s dewatering performance, forming uniformity, and operational stability.
For press felts and forming fabrics, proper cleaning methods also help extend the service life of the clothing.
Spray performance depends not only on water pressure but also on the pressure distribution inside the shower pipe, the type of spray nozzles, the spacing between nozzles, and the movement of the shower pipe.
If the pressure inside the shower pipe is uneven, or the spray nozzles are not properly selected or spaced, even high-pressure water may not provide uniform cleaning across the machine width.
In addition, it is very important to match the oscillation speed to the paper machine's operating speed.
Synchronization here does not simply mean keeping the oscillator at the same speed as the paper machine. Rather, it involves determining the appropriate oscillation frequency based on the paper machine’s speed, the fabric’s running speed, the nozzle spacing, and the oscillation stroke.
Ideally, the shower pipe should change position according to the preset oscillation pattern during each revolution of the fabric, allowing the spray nozzles to provide uniform coverage across the entire fabric width.
If the pressure distribution within the shower pipe is uneven, or if the nozzles are improperly selected or spaced, inconsistent cleaning results across the width of the paper machine may occur even when using high-pressure water.
